Water Softener Basics & Benefits

5/2/2017

The more I have the opportunity to talk with people and help them with water solutions for their homes and families, I get lots of questions about what a water softener does and the benefits of having one in your home. In this blog I want to address those questions and keep it simple!  There’s lots of detailed info out there that you could spend reading for hours (and hours)…but straightforward and simple works for me!  So here are the basics about water softeners.

The “job” of a water softener is to remove the hardness from water.  Certain parts of the country (like Phoenix and surrounding areas) have naturally occurring hard water.  That means we have a lot of calcium and magnesium in our water sources which causes the hardness.  Have you ever seen that grey/green “junk” build up on your faucets, shower head and other fixtures…that is the “hardness”.  Not only does the hardness damage your fixtures…it can also wreak havoc on your appliances…including your dishwasher, laundry machine and hot water heater!  Yikes…all very expensive to replace / repair.  Soft water will extend the life of those appliances and reduce repairs…saving you money! In addition, the “hardness” in the water is the culprit for those pesky spots on your dishes and film on your shower doors.

A water softener system with salt (or potassium) can significantly reduce the hardness of the water in your home! Not only will it extend the life of your fixtures and appliances…it provides additional benefits as well.  The health of your hair and skin will get a major boost too.  Hard water can damage your hair and leave it feeling dry and straw-like and your skin drier.  Soft water allows your shampoo/conditioner to work more effectively and really “clean” and moisturize your hair with less minerals to interfere.  There’s less soap residue that can lead to dry, itchy skin.  Softened water does a better job rinsing, unclogging pores and letting moisture into your hair and skin.

Finally, soft water requires over 50% less detergent to do the same amount of laundry. Detergents do not mix well with hard water, so by using soft water instead your detergent is able to go further. This means you won’t have to purchase detergent nearly as often, but you’ll be getting even cleaner results.  Soft water also helps keep your clothes bright and last longer.

Have more questions…give me a call.  I love helping folks find what’s right for their home and families’ water needs!  We also love giving back…check out how each water softener purchased changes the lives of children and families with our filter / bucket donation thru Chances for Children in Haiti.

I really like the idea of having soft water. We live right in the middle of the hardest water section of the US, and it's kind of a pain. Like you said, we'd love to get rid of the gray stuff built up on our faucets.

It is good to know that soft water allows shampoo and conditioner to work more effectively and really “clean” and moisturize the hair with less minerals to interfere. My wife sometimes complains that her hair and scalp appears to be dry even when she used shampoo or conditioner. Since it appears that hard water is what's causing it, I'll have a water softener installed in our home.

I had no idea that there are so many benefits of having a water softener in your home, so I am glad that I found this article. You make a great point that the water softener can extend the life of your fixtures and appliances because it reduces the hardness of the water. This would be a great benefit for my family because we would save money in the long run. Also, the fact that soft water allows your hair to be more clean and moisturized is something I would definitely benefit from because I always notice that my hair is dry!

My husband and I just moved into a new home with hard water, and we were considering getting a water softener to change this. Your article had some great points about the benefits of a product like this, and I liked how you said that water softeners can help you cut your laundry detergent use by half. I always use way too much detergent, so I'll keep this in mind when deciding if a water softener is right for me.

I used to live in Maine where we had no use for water softeners because our water was already soft. My family and I have recently relocated to Utah, where the map indicates has very hard water. It's so interesting that that gray/green build up on faucets is the "hardness" in the water.

It sure was nice when you explained that water softening systems are responsible for removing the calcium and magnesium in the water that causes hardness. Those calcium and magnesium are the reason why my hair, like bones, are dry and hard. I do not want that. It might be best if I get a softener in the house and remove the minerals in the water that damages my skin. Hopefully, though, it works in removing the salt from the water.

My dad thinks that our water is a bit hard for consumption and use. It was stated here that using a water softener with salt can reduce the hardness of the water at home. Having said that, it's advisable to hire professionals for quality water installation services.

Thanks for pointing out that using a water softener system will extend the life of your appliances. My husband and I just replaced our home's appliances with new, more efficient models. I want them to last as long as possible, so I'll definitely take your advice and get a water softening system for my home.

I like that you said that hard water can naturally cause damage to sinks, dishwashers, laundry machines and hot heater water, but with a water softener, there's no need to replace all those appliances in order to extend their life. I agree that having a residential water softener would be a much more practical and affordable way to reduce repairs in the home. My husband and I are noticing that hard water is creating these types of problems in our home with our appliances, so we will look for a business that provides residential water softeners in our area so that the hardness can be removed from our water and our appliances can last us a long time.

Hardness sounds like something that someone would want to do their best to prevent. If getting a water softener would help out with that then this is something I want to invest in. I don't want damage to be done to my faucets and fixtures.

I didn't know that getting a water softener can help prolong the life of your appliances. My husband and I are wanting to get a water softener and need to find the best plumber to come and install it for us. Hopefully, I can do some research and find the best plumbers in our area.

I had no idea that hard water will damage your hair. This is a great insight that might make it easier to choose a water softener repair. My sister might like knowing that a water softener will be able to provide this service for her.

I like what you said about how a water softener removes the hardness from the water by adding salt or potassium. My brother's water has been really hard and has been building up some junk around his faucets. It would be really helpful if he could get a professional to help him install it.

Something I like that you said was that a water softener that uses salt can significantly reduce water hardness. Maybe it would be good to get a water softener that uses salt. This is something I am going to look into so I can get rid of the water hardness in my home.

I never knew that soft water requires over 50% less detergent to do the same amount of laundry! My husband and I have five children, so we definitely go through our fair share of laundry detergent. We've been looking into ways to save long-term, and it sounds like investing in a water softening system could be a great idea with all these benefits considered. We'll have to look into installation companies in our area. Thanks for the information!

It was interesting to learn that water softener services can help extend the life of your fixtures and even give your hair and skin a boost too. I have noticed that my hair has been feeling dry after showers just like you mentioned! Maybe its time I looked for some water softener services in Steuben County NY area for some assistance in this.

My house must be in one of the places where hard water is naturally occurring because our sink and tub are stained, as well as have clogged drains sometimes due to mineral build-up. Thanks for mentioning that not only are drains not safe, but hot water heaters and laundry machines aren't safe either. I'm going to have to look into water softeners.

It's great to know that the job of a water softener treatment system would be to remove hardness from water. I think I'll hire a residential company to install this for me. I've been having some trouble with my pipes because of the hard water in my home, so this needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

I was very interested in all the points about how softened water can help with baths and skincare. We've been trying to prepare a house to be our dedicated vacation spot if ever a family member needs a place to relax. Naturally, we would like to install things like spa fixtures and different swimming pool installations, so if softened water can make this vacation house that bit more relaxing to stay in, I'll consult a plumber about it right away.

Thank you for sharing that a water softener can improve your hair and skin conditions by not making them get any drier as it filters out all minerals that are bad for you. My family and I just moved to a new home and we have noticed that our skin and hair are getting drier which is bad since one of my children is having eczema. I think it would be great if I get a water softener system that can help with our situations by hiring a professional service to install it.

I will remind her to choose an experienced and qualified plumber to ensure that the system is installed properly.

We just replaced all of our bathroom and kitchen pipes and fixtures. What we found in them was a lot of hard water deposits that interfered with the flow of our water. I like how you said that the potassium in a water softener system can reduce the hardness of the water and make it so your fixtures will last longer. We will call a professional soft water professional sometime this month so we won't have to replace the fixture we just put in.

I visited my sister the other day and realized how her bathroom fixtures looked white and gray, so I suspect she's dealing with hard water. I'm glad you talked about how hard water could be treated and the importance of doing it before it damages a house's appliances, so I'll make sure my sister knows about this right now. Thanks for the information on water softener and how it helps removes your water's hardness.

Even though your drinking water appears to be perfectly clear and odorless, you should remain cautious. Clear drinking water does not always mean it is safe to drink. Lead and other contaminants are colorless and odorless, making them extremely dangerous. You can't tell if the water you're drinking is safe to drink just by looking at it. That doesn't imply you have to drink bottled water to keep safe; it just means you should be aware of the risks of water pollution and how to prevent them.

I liked how this post pointed out that a water softener system can greatly decrease the hardness of the water in your house. That's probably why my husband wants us to have a home water softener. I should advise him to hire a contractor that specializes in home water softener installation to ensure it is set properly.

It got me when you said that hard water can also damage our appliances aside from the plumbing fixtures around the house. I think that is the cause why our faucets are looking old and worn out after just living here for three years. In that case, we should probably get a water softener installed this year to prevent the appliances from developing issues, especially when I just bought a new automatic washing machine.
